How We Teach Emotional Regulation at Preschool in Clarksville, MD
At our preschool, emotional regulation is something we actively teach and practice every day. Our goal is to create an environment where children feel safe, supported, and encouraged to express their emotions in a healthy way.
At Your Journey Preschool, this is how we do it:
Modeling Healthy Emotional Responses
Children often learn best by observing adults, so we make it a point to model healthy emotional responses. When we experience emotions like frustration or excitement, we verbalize how we feel and explain how we’re managing those emotions.
Breathing and Relaxation Techniques
One of the most effective strategies for emotional regulation is teaching children to pause and breathe before reacting. We incorporate simple breathing exercises into our daily routine. This helps children calm down in moments of stress or excitement. We also teach other relaxation techniques, such as stretching or visualizing a calming image, to help children manage overwhelming emotions.
Using Feelings Charts and Visual Aids
We use feelings charts in the classroom, which show a variety of faces representing different emotions. Children can point to the face that best matches how they’re feeling, which provides an outlet for expression and can lead to a conversation about what’s going on. These charts also encourage children to think about how their emotions may change throughout the day.
Emotional regulation is a skill that will serve preschoolers well in all aspects of their lives. By teaching children how to identify, understand, and manage their emotions, we give them the tools they need to thrive socially and emotionally. Interested in learning more?
